Nintendo has shipped more Switch copies than Wii in Japan

Nintendo seems to have shipped more Switch consoles in Japan than it ever delivered from the Wii. It is estimated that the Switch has been delivered a total of 12.8 million deliveries in Nintendo’s home country, compared to 12.7 million deliveries of the Wii.

The Japanese gaming website Famitsu reports that the estimated cumulative sales of the Nintendo Switch in Japan are 12,801,222 units, from March 3, 2017 to March 22, 2020. According to analyst Daniel Ahmad from research company Niko, the Switch has thus surpassed the Nintendo Wii in Japan, which has been delivered 12.7 million times in the country to date. The Wii went on sale 14 years ago.

According to Famitsu, 392,576 units of the Switch were shipped in Japan between March 16 and March 22. Ahmad says that that means a record week for the Switch. The number is said to be higher than the first week of the original Switch’s release in 2017 and is also a lot higher than Switch deliveries in Japan in the previous weeks of this year.

It seems that the recent release of Animal Crossing: New Horizons contributed significantly to the 12.8 million figure. Ahmad says it appears that Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ physical and digital deliveries are already above average in its first three days. 2.5 million came out and that this game release also extends the deliveries of the Switch has pushed up, including the introduction of a special Animal Crossing version of the Switch.

The Nintendo Switch, which has been on the market for about three years now, is far from over the Wii when looking at total worldwide deliveries. Based on the most recent information from Nintendo for the Wii, that figure stands at 101.6 million units, compared to 52.5 million for the Nintendo Switch.
