Nintendo has sent website Game Jolt a dmca request to take 562 fangames offline. The games created by fans contain copyrighted material, according to Nintendo.

Game Jolt will honor the request, but will do so in a way that the developers of the games can still access their game. However, the fan games can no longer be downloaded by others. The website has also decided to put dmca requests online from now on. This way, Nintendo’s takedown request can be viewed in its entirety.

Nintendo America lists all URLs that contain games that contain copyrighted material or trademarks of the company. These include games that use elements from the Mario, Zelda and Pokémon franchises. Game Jolt is an indie game website where users can upload their own custom games.

Nintendo is known for actively protecting its copyrights and trademarks. Recently, a remake of Metroid 2 was taken offline after it hit the headlines when the game came out ten years later on the franchise’s thirtieth anniversary. A fan-made Pokémon Uranium game was also taken offline and the Internet Archive had to remove 13 volumes of Nintendo Power magazine shortly after publication.
