Nintendo focuses on releasing smartphone applications in 2016
Nintendo has provided information about its plans for this year. The company plans to release a number of smartphone applications featuring Nintendo characters. There are not many details, but the first new app should be released in March.
That said Nintendo Director Tatsumi Kimishima in an interview with the Japanese newspaper Mainichi Shimbun. According to the CEO, a lot of work has been done recently on smartphone applications, the intention of which is to be released this year. The first application should be released in March, but the exact content is still unclear, although Kimishima states that using ‘points can be earned’. The intention is that classic Nintendo characters will make their appearance in the apps that come out this year.
Furthermore, Nintendo is going to provide more details about the new NX game console this year. Since Kimishima only talks about giving information, and not about a release, it’s unclear whether the console will be released in 2016, as previously reported in rumors. According to Kimishima, the NX uses a completely new concept, and does not build on existing consoles, although no further details were given. Finally, the Nintendo CEO states that talks are being held with companies about bringing Nintendo content to films, series and also amusement parks. Nintendo previously announced that it had such plans.
With the plans for 2016 new sources of income must be tapped. Nintendo has been dealing with disappointing business results for some time and is therefore trying to establish a new business model with more diversity in revenues.
