Nintendo expects Switch production and delivery delays due to coronavirus

Nintendo has apologized on its Japanese website for expected production and delivery issues for the Switch console and its accessories. Due to the recent outbreak of a coronavirus, the manufacturer expects delays.

In the message on the Japanese site, Nintendo specifically talks about delays for the Japanese market. That is Nintendo’s home market and the company sells a relatively large part of its products there. Nintendo manufactures its Switch consoles in China and partly in Vietnam. The report does not say whether the delay will affect other parts of the world.

Nintendo also expects new deliveries of the Ring-Con, the accessory that comes with the Ring Fit Adventure game, to be delayed. The South China Morning Post wrote on Wednesday that the demand for that game in China has increased significantly since the virus outbreak, because people are at home a lot. The game is sold for twice the retail price on trading websites, the newspaper said. The game has not yet been officially released in China, but major online stores in the country are already selling the game.

Since the outbreak of the virus, various reports have appeared about the possible impact on the production of tech products, but the news is mostly unconfirmed. Foxconn, a manufacturer that makes iPhones for Apple, among other things, initially said the virus would have little impact. A Reuters source reported earlier this week that iPhone production will suffer a significant slowdown if Chinese factories have to remain closed after February 10.
