Nintendo denies that Wii U production will be halted this week
A Nintendo spokesperson has told Japan’s ITMedia that the company will not stop production of the Wii U yet. The company denies reports from Eurogamer, which stated that production would stop this week.
The spokesperson indicates that production of the Wii U will continue and points out that games for the console will still be released in 2017, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. However, the new Zelda game also appears for the Switch.
On Tuesday, Eurogamer announced that Nintendo will stop production of the Wii U this week. Several anonymous sources have confirmed this. Eurogamer has reliable sources within Nintendo’s production chain, as the website was able to reveal how the system would work and look months before the official announcement of the Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo has previously denied reports of a Wii U production stop to ITMedia. The console manufacturer did this in March after reporting from the Japanese business newspaper Nikkei, which wrote that production of the console would stop in the fall.
In April, Nintendo did indicate that the company plans to sharply cut production of Wii U consoles in the fiscal year ending March 2017. The company said it expects the console to ship 800,000 times in the year. .
Nintendo has sold 13.36 million units of the Wii U to date. This makes the console a much less successful than the Wii, which sold 101 million copies. The GameCube also fared better with 21 million copies. The new Nintendo Switch, which can be used both as a handheld and in combination with a TV, will be released in March 2017.
