Nintendo achieves record profits thanks to the latest Zelda game, Switch and Mario film
Nintendo achieved a record profit of almost 1.19 billion euros in the past quarter. The Japanese company attributes this, among other things, to the success of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom for the Nintendo Switch and the film The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
The company has never achieved this before according to Bloomberg such a high profit in the first quarter of a financial year. Nintendo deserved more than 2.95 billion euros in the past quarter, which is an increase of fifty percent. Of that turnover, approximately 40 percent was operational profit, an increase of more than 82 percent compared to the same quarter last year. The previous profit record for the first quarter of a fiscal year was set in 2020, when Nintendo had just released Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
In their own words, the most recent Zelda game and the Mario film released in April were responsible for the remarkably high profit. The company does not reveal exactly how much money was made from the Mario film, although sales within the ‘mobile and IP-related content’ category increased by 190 percent.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sold more than 18.5 million copies in the past quarter. This made the game the eighth best-selling game for the Nintendo Switch ever within the first few months of its release. According to the company, this also led to an increase in the number of Switch consoles sold, namely 3.9 million units compared to 3.4 million units in the same quarter last year.
The company also provides some details about the composition of the net profit. For example, the share of hardware sales and sales figures from digital games appears to have decreased. This is partly due to an increased share of Nintendo Switch OLED models, which have a lower profit margin. An increase in profits from first-party games compensated for this.
