Nintendo 3DS sells 60 million copies in five years
Nintendo has sold 60 million units of the Nintendo 3DS. That feat was achieved about five years after the handheld console was introduced. Incidentally, the number of sixty million is considerably less than with other gaming handhelds from Nintendo.
The Japanese company has released the sales figures itself, in a statement sent to several gaming news sites, including Eurogamer. At the end of the previous quarter, the number of 3DS consoles sold was still 58.5 million units, which shows that sales are declining. This probably also has to do with the age of the device: Nintendo released the 3DS a little over five years ago.
With sales of sixty million units, the 3DS is not doing as well as other Nintendo devices. For example, the DS sold more than twice as much, and the GameBoy Color also outperformed. However, the 3DS is still supported with new games; Pokémon Sun and Moon should be released in November.
Nintendo seems to be working on a successor to the handhelds from the DS series. Rumor has it that a device codenamed MH is being developed. Incidentally, the Japanese company itself already announced that a new gaming console is being developed under the code name NX, intended for a release in March next year. Many details are still missing, but it is possible that Nintendo will reveal more information at the upcoming E3 fair.
