The makers of Nintendo 3DS emulator Citra have released an Android version. The emulator works on 64bit devices running Android 8.0 or newer. There must also be support for OpenGL ES 3.2 or higher.

Citra has been around for years for PCs and some working unofficial ports for Android have already appeared, but the developers have now put their own version in the Google Play Store. According to the makers, the Early Access version of the emulator is compatible with hundreds of Nintendo 3DS games.

The Android version of Citra also has options such as resolution scaling and texture filtering to increase the image quality of games. According to the makers, that works best on high-end smartphones. Citra supports on Android 3DS features such as the camera, microphone and motion control.

It is possible to play with virtual buttons displayed on the screen, but there is also support for external controllers. Citra is free to download. There is also a Premium version with cosmetic extras such as a dark mode. The source code of the Citra app is available on GitHub.
