Nintendo: 2.3 million copies of NES Classic Mini sold
Nintendo has reported that it has sold approximately 2.3 million units of its popular NES Classic Mini worldwide. The retro game console is no longer sold, but there may be a successor.
In a conversation with IGN, Nintendo CEO Reggie Fils-Aime came up with this number. These are game consoles delivered to shops since the launch on November 11 last year. In January, that number was still 1.5 million units. The sales numbers were achieved despite major delivery issues that the company had been struggling with since its release. And earlier this month, Nintendo announced it would stop selling the NES Classic Mini.
Fils-Aime said his company has always planned to sell the NES Classic Mini for a short period of time only. This has to do with the limited capacity that his company has; around the release of the classic game console, work was also underway on the Switch, which was given priority. However, the CEO does state that due to the unexpectedly high demand for the NES Classic Mini, the production capacity has been increased for some time, so that in the end more were sold than initially planned.
Earlier this month, rumors surfaced about a possible new classic game console; Nintendo is said to be working on a remake of the SNES. This should be released at the end of this year, but Fils-Aime didn’t say anything about this in the conversation with IGN.
