Nikon’s D750 uses unencrypted Wi-Fi connections by default

Nikon warns owners of the new D750 DSLR to manually activate the security feature of the accompanying Wi-Fi mobile app. By default, the camera makes an unencrypted connection, so that others can unnoticed take pictures from the device.

The British website Amateurphotographer writes that they easily managed to stealthily copy photos from the memory card inserted in the D750 using the Nikon Wi-Fi app. By default, the dslr connects to a mobile phone or tablet based on an unencrypted connection. In addition, the camera does not indicate if the mobile app has successfully connected.

Nikon also has a feature that automatically sends photos to the first mobile device found with its Wi-Fi app. In theory, this allows someone to stand close to a photographer, for example, and unnoticed collect all his photos or copy previously saved prints.

In response to the issue, Nikon says it strongly recommends that customers manually activate the security settings for making encrypted connections in the app. It is unclear whether the manufacturer will soon release an update for the app that offers a secure Wi-Fi connection as standard: Nikon says it will continue to study the problem.
