Nikon has revealed all the details of its D6 DSLR. The camera gets a completely new autofocus system, with fewer focus points than with the D5, but with a higher accuracy. The device has a 20.8-megapixel full-frame sensor.

The Nikon D6’s new focus system has 105 points, all of which are cross-sensitive. The Nikon D5 contained 153 focus points, but not all of them could be selected manually, with the D6 you can. Also, the density of the focus points is 1.6 times higher with the new model. The middle 15 focus points are sensitive enough to also be able to focus at an aperture of f/8. The center focus point goes up to a light value of -4.5EV and at all other points it is -4EV. According to Nikon, the camera also has an improved subject recognition system. That should improve the tracking of subjects with autofocus.

The resolution of the Nikon D6 is the same as that of its predecessor D5, but the sensor is combined in the new device with a new Expeed 6 image processor. The light sensitivity of the sensor is adjustable from ISO 100 to 102,400 and that can be digitally expanded up to five stops to an equivalent of ISO 3.2 million.

When using the mirror, the maximum shooting speed is 14 frames per second. When the mirror is up, the device will reach 10.5 fps in a silent mode. The viewfinder cannot be used, but the image can be viewed via live view on the screen on the back. In this mode it is also possible to take pictures at 30fps or 60fps at a resolution of eight and two megapixels respectively. The camera films in 4k resolution with a maximum of 30fps.

The device has two slots for xqd or CFexpress memory cards. There is no longer support for CompactFlash. The housing also has built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. Just like the predecessor, there is also a gigabit Ethernet port on the 1440 gram camera.

Nikon announced the development of the D6 DSLR in April last year. The manufacturer aims with the device in particular at professional sports photographers. The camera will be available for purchase at the beginning of April for a suggested retail price of EUR 7299.

Nikon is also presenting two new Nikkor Z lenses for its mirrorless mirrorless system cameras. There will be a 20mm f/1.8 S and a 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR. Both lenses are sealed against dust and moisture. The 20mm lens will be on sale from March 19 for €1249 and the 24-200mm zoom will follow on April 16 for €999.
