Nikon will release a mirrorless camera in spring 2019
In an interview with NHK World Japan, a senior Nikon executive in Japan said that his company will not release a mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera this year, but that it will probably be released in the spring of next year.
According to the executive, Kimito Uemura, the system camera is already in development and is expected to be released in the spring of 2019. In the interview, which was noted by NikonEye among others, he gave no further specifications of the new Nikon camera. For example, it is not clear whether it is a full-frame or an aps-c model. Nor is it clear whether or not existing Nikon lenses can be used with an adapter on the mirrorless camera.
In July 2017, Nikon already hinted that it was working on ‘mirrorless products’, although no further details were disclosed at the time. At the moment, after Leica, Sony is actually the only important player in the market for system cameras with a full-frame sensor. For the time being, Canon has not yet released a mirrorless full-frame camera with an electronic viewfinder. The Japanese newspaper Nikkei previously reported that Canon is now willing to release fewer DSLRs, so that the company can fully focus on mirrorless cameras. Canon already has mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses, such as the EOS M5, but these have aps-c sensors. Nikon has previously released a mirrorless camera with a 1″ sensor and interchangeable lenses, the Nikon 1.
