Nikon has announced that it is working on the D5; a professional dslr that will succeed the current Nikon D4 and D4s. There will also be a new flash unit with type number SB-5000 and a WT-6 transmitter for wireless file transfer.

Nikon announces the development of the new top model by means of a short announcement. No details have yet been released about the specifications of the Nikon D5, but it is certain that it is the successor to the Nikon D4, which appeared in 2012. That device has a full-frame sensor with a resolution of 16.2 megapixels, 51 autofocus points and a maximum shooting speed of 10fps. In 2014, Nikon released an update in the form of the D4s, which achieve 11fps, but are otherwise broadly the same as the D4.

Nikon also announces that a new wireless transmitter will appear, the WT-6. That suggests that the Nikon D5 will not get a built-in WiFi function. To wirelessly transfer files with the Nikon D4 and D4s, users currently need to use the WT-5 transmitter. In addition to the new dslr and wireless module, Nikon is also working on the Speedlight SB-5000, a flash that will be positioned as a top model. Currently, the SB-910 is the most advanced Speedlight, Nikon does not have flash units with a higher type number. The naming of the new model may indicate a larger flash.

It is not yet known when Nikon will announce more about the new products. Perhaps the manufacturer will provide more clarity at the beginning of 2016 during the CES electronics fair. That fair was seized by Nikon in 2012 and 2014 to show the D4 and D4s.
