Nike stops making fitness trackers
Nike will permanently stop developing fitness trackers such as the Nike+ FuelBand. The clothing company wants to focus more on making sports apps, such as NikeFuel. It was previously rumored that development was halted.
Nike confirms an earlier rumor that Nike would stop developing its fitness trackers. The company previously said it would lay off 55 of the 70 people working on the FuelBand, though it denied at the time that it would stop developing the device altogether.
The company is investing in sports apps now that it stops developing the fitness tracker. Nike CEO Mark Parker tells CNBC he hopes the number of users of the sports app NikeFuel will increase from 30 million to 100 million. Parker says he thinks sports apps will play a “growing role.”
The Nike boss would not comment on whether there will be a joint product from Apple and Nike. He does say that Nike is very positive about the current collaboration with Apple.
