Nightdive Releases Playable Demo Of System Shock Remake
Developer Nightdive Studios has released a playable demo of the System Shock remake. Those interested can download the demo and try the variety of weapons, for example.
The playable alpha demo, which can be downloaded via both Steam and GOG, can be regarded as a short preview according to Nightdive. Downloading the demo requires 2.3GB of storage space, and gives those interested the opportunity to explore the space station and try out the weaponry. The developer emphasizes that it is a very early demo and that the performance and content are not final yet. It is not yet known when the remake will be officially released.
System Shock originally came out in 1994. In 2016 Nightdive raised enough money through Kickstarter to make a remake. In total, more than $1.35 million was raised. It is a reboot of the original that is rebuilt from the ground up. The makers say they keep the classic experience and all the positives of the original and combine that with modern graphics, among other things.
Set in 2072, the story revolves around a hacker who is caught trying to get hold of files about a space station called Citadel Station. He makes a deal to hack into the station’s AI named Shodan. He eventually wakes up from a coma to find that the AI has taken over the spaceship and isn’t exactly peaceful.
The first System Shock game was released in 1994 and the second part appeared in 1999. System Shock 3 was announced at the end of 2015 and the first images were shown in March this year. Developer OtherSide Entertainment is working on part three and it was recently announced that the Chinese Tencent got hold of the rights to this. The System Shock games are action RPGs with a cyberpunk theme. The first two games received critical acclaim at the time of their release and are still considered classics in the genre.
