‘Next VLC version will include Chromecast support’

It seems that the developers of VLC will add the long-awaited Chromecast support in the next version. There are indications for this in the release notes of the new version.

The American Pocket-Lint, among others, reported on Tuesday that indications have appeared in VLC’s release notes for the next version for support for Google’s HDMI dongle Chromecast. It says that an output module for Chromecast will be included in version 3.0, but more details are lacking so far.

Back in June, the VideoLAN developers confirmed that they were working hard on Chromecast support. The iOS version, which also appeared again in the App Store on Tuesday, would be the first to offer that support. Android and desktop versions for Windows, Mac and Linux would soon follow.

The VLC media player is very popular as the open source software is available for a wide variety of platforms and supports numerous codecs out-of-the-box. By adding Chromecast support, users can cast content from a smartphone or desktop to a television via VLC. It is not yet known when version 3.0 will be released; its release has been delayed for weeks.
