Next OnePlus smartphone gets 120Hz screen – update
The next smartphone from OnePlus will have a screen with a refresh rate of 120Hz. The company has announced that. The current 7T and 7T Pro have a 90Hz screen. Samsung produces the OLED screens for OnePlus.
OnePlus will also add a memc chip to the upcoming phone, says CEO Pete Lau in conversation with The Verge. Memc stands for motion estimation/motion compensation. The chip has to add extra frames to videos to be able to show them at 120Hz. The phone does not have a variable refresh rate, although users can switch it back to 60Hz. The operation of the memc chip can also be switched off.
The OLED screen has a maximum brightness of 1000 candela per square meter and supports HDR. The phone handles touch input at 240Hz. OnePlus has not disclosed further details of the screen, including the resolution.
The image that OnePlus sent to The Verge also shows the mechanism for a pop-up camera. Earlier renders of the OnePlus 8 phones show a screen with a hole, which makes a pop-up camera unnecessary. OnePlus previously showed a dummy of the suspected OnePlus 8 Lite with a notch in the screen.
The manufacturer is working with Samsung on the screens. OnePlus purchases components together with Oppo, Realme and Vivo, among others. It is obvious that those manufacturers will also release smartphones with approximately the same screen in the near future. OnePlus presented the Concept One last week. It doesn’t have a 120Hz screen. It is unknown when the Chinese manufacturer wants to release its first smartphone with a 120Hz screen.
Update, 14:15: OnePlus confirms by email that the resolution is 1440p. The manufacturer has now also put its own story about the screen online.
