Newgrounds is working on an emulator for Flash content
Newgrounds, a website that deals with, among other things, offering Flash games, is working on an emulator to emulate Flash content. The emulator will be open source and should keep Flash running on the web.
The provider of Flash games announced the news itself on its forum, after rumors about it had appeared. The emulator will be called Ruffle, and should ensure that Flash content can continue to be played once Adobe pulls the plug; the software has had the End Of Life status for some time now. This means that websites that offer games or animations based on Flash must look for an alternative.
With Ruffle, Newgrounds thinks it will keep Flash content usable. The emulator, written in Rust, also gets a browser plugin that automatically recognizes Flash content on websites and can automatically replace the code with Ruffle. Interested parties can follow the development of the software on the accompanying website, which also includes a demo. Users can upload their own .swf files for Ruffle to play.
Flash has been out of favor on the web for some time, mainly due to security concerns and new technologies such as HTML5. Major browsers such as Chrome, Firefox and Safari no longer have Flash enabled by default.
