New Xbox generation is called Xbox and Series X is the name of the first console
Microsoft has clarified the naming of the next generation of Xbox consoles. The new consoles will simply be named Xbox, with no suffix for a generation such as ‘360’ and ‘One’. The first Xbox of the new generation will be named Series X.
With the simplified naming, Microsoft wants to leave room for ‘extra consoles’. That’s what a Microsoft spokesperson told Business Insider. The spokesperson did not say which consoles are yet to come. According to previous rumors, Microsoft wants to release two consoles anyway. Series X announced last week and an unannounced console with a lower clocked CPU and no disk reader.
It is not the first time that an Xbox generation is only given the name Xbox: the company’s first console was also called Xbox. However, only one console came out in that generation. In the two generations that followed – the 360 and One generation – several consoles were released. Think of the Xbox 360 S and the Xbox One X.
Microsoft probably won’t release a new console that’s just called Xbox, but the new naming does mean that upcoming consoles don’t necessarily have to be called Xbox Series X. It is also not certain that future models will carry the ‘Series’ designation. Microsoft has not said exactly how the naming will work.
Microsoft first showed the Series X late last week. This console will have a square tower design, an optical drive reader and a custom AMD Zen 2 soc with Navi GPU. The Series X has support for frame rates of 60 fps in combination with a 4k resolution and gets an SSD for faster loading times. The console will be released at the end of next year for an unknown price.
