New Xbox Edge Browser Released Supports Web Services Like Google Stadia
Microsoft has added the new Edge browser in the September update for latest two generations of Xbox consoles. This is the Chromium-based variant. This includes the ability to use Google Stadia and, in a limited form, also Discord.
The browser was already available in the form of a limited test, but is now available to all users. The Verge showed in a demo video of the browser preview that Google Stadia works on this. The site uses an Xbox Series X for that demo, but in principle the same setup should also work on an Xbox One, although performance may be less there. Mouse and keyboard are also supported, but Geforce NOW will not work on Edge.
The update also brings support for Discord, to some extent. Users can go to the web version of the app, login and use text chat without hindrance. With speech channels it falls partly short: one can go into a channel and hear what others are saying, but a microphone is not detected, so one cannot say anything oneself. Also, the web app cannot run in the background.
Microsoft is also adding a Play Later queue to its consoles. Here, players can add Xbox Game Pass games that seem interesting. If there is nothing in the queue, Microsoft will come up with personalized suggestions.
Recently, the Xbox app for Windows also gained support for Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Remote Play. This allows gamers to play Xbox games that run in the cloud or on their Xbox console located elsewhere, respectively.
