Microsoft has released a new web version of Skype. The main improvements are HD video calls and the ability to record video calls. Skype for Web works on Windows and macOS, but is only supported by the Edge and Chrome browsers.

Skype for Web has been an alternative since 2016 for users who don’t feel like, or don’t get permission, to install the Skype client on their system. However, the web version has lagged considerably behind the desktop programs in terms of functionality. The update now brings a lot of ‘new’ possibilities. For example, Skype for Web now supports HD quality video calls, both in private and group chats.

Also new to the web version of Skype is the video call recording feature. There is also an improved notification panel where the user can see at a glance what he has missed, which comments have been received or in which messages he has been mentioned. The new search function allows you to search for words or phrases in entire conversations and in the Gallery photos, files and links are now bundled, so that the user no longer has to scroll through his chat history for those items.

The system requirements for Skype for Web are quite strict: the user must have Windows 10 or macOS 10.12 with the latest version of Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. Other browsers are not supported for the time being.
