New version Raspberry Pi Zero gets camera connector

The Raspberry Pi Zero gets a camera connection. The single board computer was temporarily out of production due to the release of the Raspberry Pi 3 and in the meantime the developer has made the addition of the ‘most requested feature’.

Eben Upton of the Raspberry Pi Foundation announced the news in a blog post. The camera connection is the same that was already found on the compute module development kit. This appears to fit exactly between the screw holes on one of the short sides. To utilize the camera capability, users will need to purchase an adapter cable. The different wires of the cable are closer together on the side of the Pi Zero than on the side of the compatible camera modules. The adapter seems to be about the same price as the Pi Zero itself.

To make enough Raspberry Pi 3 boards, the foundation has temporarily stopped production of the Pi Zero. With more capacity left in the factory, production of the Pi Zero, including camera connector, will resume. The foundation has set itself a goal of producing at least 50,000 copies per month for the rest of the year. There are also 30,000 copies available immediately.
