New Sony movies appear online after hack

Five new Sony movies still in theaters have appeared on the internet after the company was hit by a hack. It is not yet certain whether the two cases are related. Meanwhile, Sony hopes to be back online on Monday.

Since the hack, five Sony films that are still in cinemas have been distributed via torrent sites, including Fury, Annie and Mr. Turner, writes the American magazine Variety. It seems to be about so-called screeners, versions of films that are sent out to critics, among others. It’s not certain that the leaks of the films have anything to do with the hack, but a Variety source who is “familiar with the circumstances” says it does.

Last week it was announced that Sony’s film division was hit by hackers. Employee systems were hit by ransomware, which shut down large parts of the network. The hackers threatened to release company information and that happened last week, according to Ars Technica. The hackers also claim to have confidential information from Sony and its actors.

Meanwhile, Sony is investigating whether the hack is the result of a Sony film about North Korean leader Kim-Jong Un. The comedy The Interview, due out next year, centers on two journalists who must help the CIA eliminate the North Korean ruler. The hack could have been carried out by the North Korean country – which is not happy with the film – or by a sympathizer. At the same time, the company is working on solving the infection: Sony hopes to be back online on Monday, The New York Times writes.
