Nintendo has announced a new member in the DS family. The Nintendo 3DS XL has a 90 percent larger screen than the 3DS, although the resolution has not been increased. The portable console should be released in Europe on July 28.

Nintendo announced the 3DS XL during its Direct presentation. The screen diagonal of the XL’s top screen measures 4.88 inches; that of the lower 4.18 inches. According to the Japanese manufacturer, the battery life of the 3DS XL when playing 3D games is 3.5 to 6.5 hours, which is slightly better than the 3DS, which officially makes it 3 to 6 hours. The device could play 6 to 10 hours of DS games, compared to 5 to 8 hours for the 3DS.

Nintendo will supply the system with a 4GB SD card, but not with an adapter. In the US, the system does come with an adapter. The 3DS XL will be released on August 19 for $200 in red and blue. Europeans have to wait until July 28, but can then also purchase a silver edition. Nintendo does not announce the European price anymore, but it can be assumed that it will be around 200 euros.
