New Battlefield game coming at the end of this year

The upcoming Battlefield game from publisher Electronic Arts will be released at the end of this year. The company made this known in an explanation of the publication of the most recent quarterly figures.

In a verbal explanation, CEO Andrew Wilson says more will be revealed about the upcoming Battlefield game in the coming months, but he says the game will see a “return to all-out military warfare.” He talks about huge battles and playing fields that have never been this big and had so many players. He also specifically mentions the computing power of the ‘next-gen platforms’ to make this possible. Also, typical Battlefield elements such as the destruction and the use of vehicles would be taken to a much higher level.

The game will be officially unveiled sometime in the spring and development is “ahead of internal milestones,” Wilson says, suggesting that the said release window at the end of this year will actually be met. EA’s CFO Blake Jorgensen underlines this. He says the team has come a long way from previous product cycles and said DICE developers are on track to deliver the earliest feature complete of all Battlefield games. That is the term for a version of the game in which everything works and is implemented for the most part, but where things like bugs and stability still need to be looked at.

The theme for the new shooter is still unknown. The last title in the series, Battlefield V, again had World War II as its era. Battlefield 1 was released before that and had the First World War as its theme. A return to modern times is therefore obvious. This will probably become clear in the coming months, as will details about the size of the playing fields and the maximum number of supported players per playing field. Last year a rumor about the latter originated from someone who often released correct information; he spoke across playing fields with more than 128 players.

The quarterly figures show that Electronic Arts recorded a lower turnover in the last three months of last year than in the same period a year earlier. This went from $1.67 billion to $1.59 billion. Net income did increase, from 211 million euros in the last quarter of 2019 to 346 million dollars in the last three months of last year.
