Netflix will use new sound technology from Sennheiser, called Ambeo 2-Channel Spatial Audio. This converts stereo sound into spatial audio without the need for special equipment. The fourth season of Stranger Things can bite the bullet.

Ambeo 2-Channel Spatial Audio converts stereo sound, which by default consists of two audio channels, into spatial audio. That will according to Sennheiser also use two sound channels. Moreover, it will be possible for content creators to adjust the implementation of the spatial audio. The technology works with the most common file formats used in the film industry.

Ambeo 2-Channel Spatial Audio works on any stereo sound system and, according to Sennheiser, it doesn’t matter whether it’s a television, headphones, tablet or laptop. A special sound system, which is equipped for spatial audio, is therefore not necessary for this technology.

The new sound technology was developed in collaboration with Netflix and other industry partners. The American streaming giant will now apply Ambeo 2-Channel Spatial Audio to the fourth season of the Stranger Things series, the Netflix movie Red Notice, The Witcher series and the future Resident Evil live-action series. Netflix subscribers don’t have to manually enable the feature; Netflix does this automatically with titles that use Ambeo 2. Sennheiser states that it licenses the technology to interested companies.
