Netflix is testing usernames in the mobile app. This makes it possible for users of the streaming service to play games directly against each other, but also to find achievements on a leaderboard. The feature will be rolled out in the coming weeks.

Tech journalist Steve Moser discovered the addition of usernames in the code of the Netflix mobile app. According to Moser, the username would only be used for multiplayer functionality in the Netflix app and to view rankings. A username could only contain letters and numbers. The icon and name associated with a Netflix account would not be shared during gaming sessions with others.

The usernames would be according to TechCrunch be used in Into The Breach, Bowling Ballers, Mahjong Solitaire and Heads Up! It’s unclear if the feature will eventually come to all games Netflix offers. Netflix confirmed to the American tech website that it is indeed testing usernames. The feature is expected to be rolled out to all users in the coming weeks. The company says it’s continuing to investigate other potential gaming features for its streaming service, but won’t provide any further details.

At the beginning of August, it was announced that Netflix wants to further expand its game library. The number of mobile games that can be downloaded via the streaming service should reach 50 this year; currently there are 26 games available on the platform. Cloud gaming also appears to be a possibility that Netflix is exploring. Some weeks ago discovered journalists from the American website Protocol that Netflix is looking for staff with experience in cloud gaming infrastructure.
