Netflix requires new Original movies to be shot in HDR

Netflix requires filmmakers who make new Original movies for the streaming platform to use high dynamic range during the shooting. Netflix probably wants to achieve that even more HDR content is available to its users.

Variety writes that quite a few filmmakers were surprised by Netflix’s new demand, but the filmmakers who attended the EnergaCamerimage film festival held in Poland seem to be increasingly accepting the change, according to the medium. Netflix’s Jimmy Fusil argues that communication about this could have been better and sometimes arrived late with filmmakers, but that this new requirement is intended to provide Netflix viewers with an authentic representation of the filmmaker’s vision.

As far as is known, the new requirement only applies to Netflix films and not to Original series that appear on the streaming platform. Incidentally, Netflix currently already has a decent list of HDR content, both movies and series, which also supports Dolby Vision.

Undoubtedly, Netflix will try to make its platform more attractive to customers and may want to counterbalance competitors such as Apple TV+, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+, which are also increasingly offering HDR content. For example, Disney+ now offers all Star Wars films in HDR, even though the original trilogy is an HDR implementation that does not significantly increase the dynamic range.
