Netflix announced in its quarterly earnings report that it added the highest number of new subscribers in its history in the last quarter of 2017. The growth was mainly in the number of members outside the US.

That number increased by 6.36 million subscribers, the highest number to date. A year earlier, the increase was around 5 million in the same quarter and around 4 million in the following quarters. Netflix reports in its quarterly figures that a total of 8.33 million new subscriptions have been taken out, along with the almost 2 million new American subscribers. This brings the sum of all subscriptions to 117.58 million.

The streaming service says that series such as Stranger Things, Black Mirror and The Crown added new episodes in the last quarter of last year. The addition of the film Bright to the offer would also have resulted in the growth of new members. According to Netflix, this self-produced film was one of the most watched originals to date in its first month. International productions such as the German Dark and the Italian Suburra also performed well. Netflix therefore plans to add more than 30 new international productions this year, including from France, Korea and Japan.

The company says it is growing faster than expected and is spending more on content than planned. This concerns an amount between 7.5 and 8 billion dollars. In addition, based on test results, it also wants to spend more money on marketing. Netflix’s revenue amounted to approximately $3.3 billion, which is a growth of 32.6 percent compared to the same quarter a year earlier. Profit came in at $186 million, compared to a profit of $67 million in the same quarter.
