Netflix raises prices by 13 to 18 percent in the US
Netflix has announced new price increases for US customers. The monthly prices of the three subscriptions will increase by a few dollars. The rate for the Standard subscription increases the most in percentage terms.
New American customers for Netflix Basic, the simplest subscription for a single screen in SD, will now pay 9 instead of 8 dollars. That is an increase of 12.5%. For the Standard plan, for two screens and HD, customers pay $13 a month instead of $11, an increase of 18.2 percent. The monthly price of Premium also goes up, from 14 to 16 dollars, or by 14.3 percent.
The price increase is effective immediately for new customers, but for existing customers Netflix will implement it in the next three months. Initially, it was only announced for the US, but Netflix is expected to increase prices in other markets in the foreseeable future. That happened with previous increases in the US as well.
It is the fourth time in its existence as a streaming service that Netflix has increased prices. The previous price increase dates from October 2017, when Premium, for example, went from 12 to 14 euros, an increase of 17 percent. With previous price increases, relatively few customers turned their backs on the service, which means that Netflix is encouraged to ask higher monthly amounts. The company said at the previous increase that the money is needed to add more exclusive TV shows and movies. At the same time, Netflix is faced with increasing competition. Disney and in the US NBC, among others, are launching services for streaming video.
