Netflix has started offering subscription plans in some countries, allowing users to stream only on mobile. In return, the subscription costs half of the current Basic subscription.

The Mobile Only subscription does not work in the Benelux, but if it did, the price would be around 4 euros per month. The price in Malaysia is 17 ringgit per month, where the Basic subscription is 33 ringgit per month, reports The Star, a newspaper in that country. For that amount, Netflix works with one stream at a time and not in HD.

The move makes sense in countries where a smartphone is the only or primary way to watch video or access the internet. This is the case in many parts of the world, including many African and Asian countries. Netflix had previously said it would look at cheaper subscriptions for Asian countries.

It is unknown if and when Netflix will offer the Mobile Only option in more countries. Netflix now has four subscriptions in the Benelux, of which Basic is the cheapest at 7.99 euros per month and Premium the most expensive at 13.99 euros per month, while some users can take out Ultra for 16.99 euros per month. In addition, Netflix says it offers the ‘best audio quality’.
