Netflix is working on an animated series around indie game Cuphead
Netflix is going to make an animated series around indie game Cuphead. The series continues The Cuphead Show! and will be about the ‘characters and world’ of Cuphead. It is not yet known when the series will be released.
The character-driven comedy series follows the “unique adventures” of the impulsive Cuphead and his brother Mugman, Netflix writes. The animation style, like StudioMDHR’s game, is inspired by cartoons from the 1930s. The creators of Cuphead will also be involved as executive producers on the TV series. Netflix Animation is responsible for the animation of The Cuphead Show!.
Co-creator Chad Moldenhauer told IGN that the series will be hand-drawn and will use as little computer animation as possible. The Moldenhauer brothers tell IGN that the series is still in the early production phase, so when the series will come to Netflix is not yet known.
According to the brothers, the series will be suitable for children, but that the jokes will also be fun for adults. The story is going to be unique, so it won’t be a TV rendition of the game. According to the creators, that story doesn’t have to continue where the game ended; useful for gamers who found the game too difficult.
Cuphead is a side-scrolling shooter where Cuphead and his brother go from boss fight to boss fight to repay their debt to the devil. The game was released for Windows and Xbox One in 2017, and is now also playable on macOS and the Nintendo Switch. The game has sold four million copies worldwide. DLC The Delicious Last Course should be released in 2020.
