Netflix is testing free subscription in Kenya
Netflix is testing a free subscription in Kenya. Users do not have to enter a payment method and get access to a quarter of the catalog. The free version only works on Android smartphones.
To use the free version of Netflix in Kenya, an account must be created and users must indicate that they are 18 years of age or older. Entering a payment method is not necessary. For the time being, this is a test in Kenya; in other countries the free version is not available.
According to Variety, about a quarter of Netflix’s offerings are on the free version. Users get personalized recommendations and features such as parental controls, the Kids profile and the ability to create multiple profiles. The free version only works with Android smartphones; downloading for offline use is not possible and it is not possible to cast the image to a TV.
Netflix says it wants to introduce Kenyans to its service. From the free version, users can upgrade to a paid plan to access the full range and features.
Last year, Netflix tested a Watch Free page. Via a web page, users worldwide could watch a number of episodes of series and movies produced by Netflix without registering. In April this year, Netflix stopped the free trial.
