Netflix is going to block proxies
Netflix is going to block users who use proxy servers or so-called ‘unblockers’. Customers use proxies for content not available in their home country, but Netflix can detect this. The company does not report how Netflix does this.
The report that Netflix posted on its blog makes it clear that the message of Sunday, January 4th, may have been based on this. In that message, TorrentFreak reported that Netflix would block VPN services by blocking the IP addresses of those services. Netflix itself denied that.
Now the company itself is coming out with an announcement that it will block proxies and other content unblockers. The otherwise unspecified system should not affect users who do not use a proxy server or the like. It is not clear from the blog whether ‘unblockers’ also include VPN connections.
Netflix states in the message that with the large number of countries where the service is now available, namely 190, it wants to respect the licenses per geographical location. The company also says that it is busy trying to arrange for the same films and TV series to be offered everywhere, but that it has not yet come to that.
