Netflix focuses on adding mobile games for subscribers

When expanding to games, Netflix will mainly focus on a range of mobile games. Those will be playable for paying subscribers at no extra cost. The company reports this during the presentation of the latest quarterly figures.

In an explanation of the quarterly Netflix announced that it is in an early stage for further expansion of games to. In doing so, the company refers to previous ‘interactivity attempts’, in the form of, for example, the interactive show Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and the games based on the Stranger Things series. Netflix says games are becoming a new category on the platform, with the primary focus initially on games for mobile devices.

Netflix isn’t giving much more details about these plans to add mobile games. For example, it is still unknown which titles will appear on the streaming platform or how exactly the games will be played. In a verbal explanation, Greg Peters , Netflix ‘s chief product officer , said some of the games will be tied to Netflix’s existing franchises. He also says that the games will not contain ads or in-game purchases. Earlier it was already clear that Netflix for its game offering a former executive of Electronic Arts and Oculus component of Facebook adoption .

Paying subscribers grew by 8.4 percent in the second quarter, bringing the total number to just over 209 million. This is a lot lower than the 27.3 percent growth a year ago, bringing the number then to 193 million subscribers. Netflix says the lower growth in the past quarter is as expected and that year-over-year comparisons are not worth much, as there was significant growth last year due to the corona pandemic. The company previously said it expected growth to level off in the first half of this year.

Revenue came in at $7.34 billion, an increase of 19.4 percent from the same quarter a year earlier. Profit came in at $1.35 billion, a marked increase from the $720 million profit recorded in the second quarter of 2020.
