Netflix climbs to nearly 104 million subscribers after strong growth quarter
The American streaming service Netflix has released its quarterly figures. This shows that a total of 5.2 million new subscribers were added in the second quarter, which is more than expected. This brings the total number of members to almost 104 million.
Netflix reports that about 80 percent of its membership growth has taken place outside the US, bringing its international membership close to its US subscriber base of approximately 52 million. It would be the largest growth in the home country since 2011. Netflix itself had expected a total of 3.2 million new members in the second quarter, which makes its expectations too low.
The Netflix series House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, among others, were provided with a new season. In total there were 14 new seasons. Netflix claims that the number of awards and nominations shows that the quality of its series continues to increase. The service announces that it will release 40 films this year, which must first be viewed via Netflix. Compared to YouTube, which reported that users watch a billion hours of content every day, Netflix says it comes out at a billion hours per week.
Turnover in the second quarter amounted to 2.76 billion dollars, which is approximately 2.4 billion euros. Compared to the same quarter last year, this represents an increase of 32.3 percent. Netflix’s net profit was $66 million.
