Netflix blockade affects some of Kabel Noord’s customers after abusing some subscribers

The Frisian internet provider Kabelnoord suffered from a too broad blockage by Netflix last weekend. A considerable number of the telecom company’s customers could not watch Netfix for several days because of the measure.

Netflix’s move should have hit some subscribers who the company says are abusing by using a proxy. Users do this, for example, to gain access to the broader American range of the service. Proxy users will then see a warning telling them to contact their provider to learn more about why their IP address is being associated with a proxy.

However, the blockade that Netflix imposed on some Kabel Noord customers on April 13 turned out to concern entire IP ranges. “Instead of blocking these users, Netflix blocks all customers who use the same range of internet feed. For Netflix this is a minimal percentage of customers, for Kabelnoord this is a significant percentage of customers. We do not get an answer to questions about why Netflix blocks so widely. said the provider.

It’s the second time in a short period of time that an overly broad Netflix block has hit the company’s customers. The problem was resolved on April 15. That is ‘quite long’, says Kabelnoord. “However, we are dependent on Netflix’s priority for us to release the service.”
