Nepal bans use of TikTok
The government of Nepal has imposed a ban on the use of TikTok in the country. According to Nepalese authorities, the social media platform ‘disrupts social harmony’ in the country.
Reuters news agency received to hear from the Nepalese Minister of Communications and Internet Technology that the government made the decision yesterday and that work is now underway on the technical implementation of the ban. For example, various telecom operators have reportedly been asked to block the app’s services through their infrastructure in Nepal.
According to media in Nepal, more than 1,600 online crimes that can be linked to TikTok have been committed in the past four years. Reuters could not confirm this. ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, has not yet responded to the ban, according to the news agency.
TikTok is also banned in India. This ban has been in place since the summer of 2020, when the Indian government banned 59 Chinese apps, including TikTok, and apps from Xiaomi and AliBaba. According to the Indian government, the apps are ‘a danger to the sovereignty and security of the country’.
