Sony PlayStation studio Naughty Dog is working on a multiplayer game set in The Last of Us universe. It will be a standalone game, with its own story and new characters. According to the studio, the game is just as big as previous The Last of Us games.

Sony only shows for the time being a concept image of the multiplayer game. Naughty Dog CEO Neil Druckmann says in a interview during the Summer Game Fest presentation that the studio can show more of the game next year. He emphasizes that it is a large multiplayer game and that the studio is therefore expanding.

The multiplayer game is set in a different part of the United States and is story-wise separate from The Last of Us Part I and Part II. The first part of the series already had a multiplayer mode called Factions. Part two was also supposed to get that, but it was scrapped. The multiplayer game is aimed at fans of the existing games as well as new players.

It is not yet known which platforms the game will come to. It is obvious that this is a PlayStation game. However, Sony is also bringing The Last of Us Part I, the upcoming remake of the first part, to PC.

Naughty Dog also announces that The Last of Us Part II is now has been sold over ten million times† That game appeared in 2020 for the PlayStation 4. Last year the game received an update that increases the frame rate on the PlayStation 5 from 30 to 60 fps.
