MyDP and hdmi compete for favor of mobile manufacturers

Two connector types would compete for the favor of mobile device manufacturers to become the standard for HD video signal output. VESA has put Mobility DisplayPort forward as a competitor for HDMI.

Standards organization VESA, or the Video Electronics Standards Association, has developed Mobility DisplayPort, abbreviated MyDP, as a standard for the output of video signals on mobile phones and tablets. The technology has to compete with a mobile variant of HDMI: MHL, or Mobile High Definition Link, which is already being used in mobile phones by HTC, LG and Samsung, among others. Currently there would be about fifty million devices with an MHL interface; that would increase to double this year. The MHL interface cannot be used to charge devices and consumes about 800mW.

However, the new VESA standard MyDP has the advantage that existing micro USB connectors can be used for the video signal. At the same time, the port can be used to charge a telephone or tablet. Chip manufacturer Analogix has developed a bridge chip that couples MyDP to an HDMI interface and enables 1080p video signals. The chip would only require 300mW and cost no more than two dollars. The MyDP link could also be used not only for video signals, but also for connecting peripherals such as keyboards and mice.
