MSI will launch Creator 17 laptop with mini LED screen next year
MSI will release a Creator 17 laptop next year as a successor to the current P75 Creator. The Creator 17 is essentially the same laptop as its predecessor, but includes some upgrades, including a display that uses mini LEDs. The laptop will be shown during CES.
The Creator 17 is largely the same laptop as the current P75 Creator, but MSI has upgraded the laptop on several fronts. The most prominent update is in the screen. According to MSI, the Creator 17 has a 4k panel that should achieve a brightness of more than 1000 cd/m². The screen therefore carries the DisplayHDR 1000 characteristic. The screen has ‘more than’ 240 zones for full-array local dimming and can display 100 percent of the dci-p3 color space.
The Creator 17’s screen also uses mini LEDs for backlighting. Mini LED screens are LCDs, but they do offer some advantages over traditional LED backlighting. The individual LEDs are smaller, allowing more to fit behind a panel. As a result, mini LEDs should provide deeper black levels and better contrast ratios compared to conventional LCD screens. Mini LED screens must also be able to achieve higher brightnesses.
Mini LED screens are not new; TCL has already released a mini LED television. Asus also showed a mini LED monitor with a thousand zones for local dimming at the beginning of this year. Apple is also rumored to be working on mini LED screens for its Macbooks. These are expected in 2020.
MSI states that the Creator 17 will get the most recent CPU and GPU processing capabilities, but exact specifications are not mentioned. Current P75 Creator laptops include Nvidia RTX GPUs and ninth-generation Intel CPUs. Intel has already released its tenth generation laptop CPUs. According to MSI, the Creator 17 also contains a USB-C connection to which an 8k screen can be connected. The laptop also contains an SD card reader, a Thunderbolt connection, an Ethernet connection and three USB ports of type a. Further specifications are as yet unknown. Current Creator P75 laptops have 82Wh batteries and a maximum of 64GB of RAM. Presumably, the Creator 17 retains that same hardware.
It is not yet known when the laptops will be released exactly. The suggested retail prices are also unknown. MSI will show the laptops during CES.
