MSI denies rumored Lenovo acquisition of gaming laptop division

MSI has strongly denied a rumor that it is in talks with Lenovo about its gaming laptop division. The company even threatens legal action against the source. Last week the rumor appeared that Lenovo was interested in MSI’s gaming branch.

“MSI is not in talks with Lenovo about the sale of the MSI Gaming Notebook division,” MSI president Andy Tung told PC World. The CEO says the company reserves the right to take legal action against the source of the rumor.

That source is Digitimes, which published the message last Friday based on its contacts in the Taiwanese tech industry. Lenovo would like to quickly gain market share in the market for gaming laptops with an acquisition and thus want to compete with Dell’s Alienware, among other things.

Lenovo previously acquired Germany’s Medion and IBM’s ThinkPad line to gain market share. The Chinese company appears to be least affected by the shrinking PC market in market research, partly due to an aggressive pricing strategy.
