MSI comes with CPU protector for Skylake processors
MSI is releasing an accessory with the CPU Guard 1151 that could protect processors with 1151 socket against bending. According to recent reports, this can happen if a heavy processor cooler is used.
With the new product, MSI is responding to reports of problems with heavy-duty coolers on Skylake-generation processors. The processors would bend due to vertical pressure because a thinner substrate is used than with the previous generation. Also, the socket can be damaged. MSI claims that the protector counters this risk by supporting the corners of the processor. The processor would then not be able to bend when the computer is stationary or moved.
The CPU protector would also be useful with a delidded processor. When the heat spreader is reseated, the CPU Guard prevents it from sliding. According to Tom’s Hardware, the protector was initially developed for this function as well.
MSI reports that the piece of metal can be used in combination with Intel Xeon E3 v5, Core, Pentium and Celeron processors. It is not clear whether the protector can also be placed on other motherboards with a 1151 socket. There is also no information about the price and it is not known whether MSI will deliver the product separately.
