Mozilla to financially support open source software development
Mozilla has announced a support program to support the development of open source software. There is initially an amount of one million dollars available that will be divided among ten projects.
One of the goals for funding is to support projects that Mozilla itself uses. The company has not yet announced which tools these are, but the intention is that they must be open source and free to use in order to be eligible. Mozilla does have a website on which all the tools it uses are registered.
In addition to supporting used software, Mozilla also wants to support projects that can contribute to the open source community, according to the browser builder on his blog. In order to identify such software development programs, Mozilla enlists the help of its users; who can nominate candidates.
Initially, there is a million dollars, about 910,000 euros, available to fund open source projects, but it is possible that this amount will be increased in the future. Ten projects are currently eligible for funding, so in all likelihood, each will receive $100,000.
Mozilla says it wants to give something back to the open source community with the funding program, since the company “has grown out of it.” Before December 12, it must be announced which projects will be the first to qualify for financial support from Mozilla.
