Mozilla stops showing ads on Tiles page

In time, the ads on the Tiles page in Firefox will disappear, Mozilla has announced. The Tiles page is their home page for many users and contains tiles that point to frequently visited websites.

The changes were made public through Mozilla’s blog. The browser maker states that it will stop the ads to put more emphasis on discovering new content via the Tiles page, although it is still unclear exactly what that will look like. Although Mozilla doesn’t say it in so many words, the ads don’t seem to have delivered enough.

Mozilla decided a few months ago to start showing ads via the Tiles page as an experiment. Before that, it had signed contracts with companies that showed ‘recommended’ content on the page. Due to current contracts, the advertisements will remain on display for a few more months. Since many users see the Tiles page when they open a new tab, the ads have a potentially wide reach.
