Mozilla removes all telemetry data collected in frame fix add-ons
Mozilla will remove all telemetry data from Firefox dated Saturday, May 4 through Saturday, May 11. The short-term fix that solved a week ago’s problems with add-ons that didn’t work had telemetry as a condition, because there was no other way.
Mozilla used the Studies system to distribute the so-called System Add-On to users affected by the failed add-ons. However, Studies is for experimental functions and involves Firefox sending telemetry data to Mozilla. That was not necessary in the case of the fix, but also unavoidable. Mozilla announced on Thursday that it will be deleting all telemetry data collected during that time period, and is asking users to double-check that the Studies setting is now in the position they prefer.
As part of the concern after the add-ons went down a week ago, Mozilla CEO Eric Rescorla outlined what exactly went wrong that weekend, what was done to rectify it, and how they plan to prevent it in the future. . In a nutshell, the certificate Mozilla uses to sign add-ons had expired after a malware check, causing them all to fail. The fastest way to fix this was to issue a fix through Studies. After that, a so-called dot release was made, which came in via the regular update channel.
