Mozilla Releases Webmaker App for Web Content Production
Mozilla has released an Android app from its Webmaker service, which makes it easy to create web applications. With the Webmaker app, the open source organization wants to help so-called ‘mobile first’ countries to produce content for the internet.
With Webmaker, anyone without technical knowledge can produce content for the internet within minutes. This includes blogs, portfolios and greeting cards. They appear on a Mozilla website after they are completed. According to Mozilla, the program also allows someone to use text, images and links, or the classic building blocks of the web.
With Webmaker, Mozilla focuses specifically on ‘mobile first’ countries, where more people have access to telephones than computers. According to the open source organization, the users of mobile devices are mostly passive users. This means that they can mainly read content with the devices, and can produce content less quickly. Mozilla released Webmaker after research showed that residents of ‘mobile first’ countries would need the service.
The service, which was released under an MPL license and can be forked through Github, currently supports four languages, namely Bengali, Portuguese, English and Indonesian. New in the most recent version is the ability to view productions on both mobile and desktop. A user can also see what someone else within the community has created and shared. It is not yet known whether Webmaker will also be available for other platforms.
