Mozilla releases Android app for closed beta of paid Firefox VPN
Mozilla has released an Android app in the Play Store specifically for Firefox’s paid VPN service. Although the app is now available, the service is still in closed beta and is currently only open to US users.
The Play Store page of the Firefox Private Network VPN app doesn’t have many details yet, except that users can choose from more than 100 servers in more than 30 countries, for example. They can connect up to five devices simultaneously to encrypt all connections on the devices. Until now, the beta is only open to American users, although that should change in the long run.
Those interested in the closed beta can sign up for the waiting list. They will then be notified as soon as the beta becomes available in regions other than the US. For now, the beta of the VPN service can only be used with Windows 10, an Android device or a Chromebook, but support for iOS, Mac and Linux should follow soon.
The service can be used during the beta for the temporary price of $5 per month. The Firefox VPN uses the WireGuard protocol and was created through a collaboration with the Mullvad VPN service. That company says it doesn’t keep any logs.
Mozilla has been testing the Firefox Private Network browser extension since September. That extension is more limited than the VPN service for which Mozilla has now introduced the Android app; it only functions as a browser proxy, so the security only works for internet traffic via the Firefox browser.
