Mozilla has made a preview version of its Fenix browser available in the Google Play Store. The app is called Firefox Preview and is for testing purposes. If you want to get started, you must first register for the test program.

Fenix is the code name of Mozilla’s browser for Android that should eventually replace Firefox. Until now, interested parties could not download the app from the Google Play Store, but with the latest preview version of the browser, called Firefox Preview, you can now.

Firefox Preview, based on Mozilla Android Components and GeckoView, is still in beta. The app still lacks some functionalities and users will undoubtedly encounter a number of bugs. The intention is that those errors will be reported to Mozilla through the test program, so that they will be fixed when the final version is released. Fenix is open source and should be ready by the end of June.

If you want to get started with Firefox Preview yourself, you must register for the beta testing program. Testers must then join a group on Google and can then receive the test builds via the Play Store.

The biggest change in Fenix is the way the app handles tabs. Most smartphone browsers leave tabs open until the user closes them. Fenix actually bundles these tabs into sessions. As soon as the user leaves the Android browser and does not open the app again within five minutes, these tabs are bundled in such a session.

The current Android version of Firefox would receive two more major updates, only to get even smaller bug fixes and security updates after Firefox 68.
