Mozilla is working on implementing a PDF viewer in the Android version of Firefox, a web developer discovered. As a result, users no longer have to download PDF files first and open them with a separate program.

The PDF viewer is an option in the Nightly version of Firefox for Android, says web developer Sören Hentschel. That implementation is still very similar to the desktop version and is not yet ready for use in the stable version, according to the developer. It works based on pdf.js, a technology developed by Mozilla to display PDFs in the browser.

Mozilla itself has not yet said anything about integrating the PDF viewer into its Android version of the browser. Features in the Nightly usually come to the stable version of the browser at a later date, but that can take months. Firefox for Android now downloads PDF files, after which users must open them in another program on the phone.
